Teach the Children

Deuteronomy 6:5-9 says, These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

I believe this verse really epitomizes the way we are to teach our children.

How many times have instructions to our children gone by the wayside?  We all know the old adage repetition, repetition, repetition.  That's how we learn in school!!  So guess what, we need to be like school teachers.

As I study this verse, I see more than just our daily devotional with prayer.  That is just a drop in the bucket.  God wants us to put His Words into the hearts of our children.  This means our conversation should include God and His Word.  After all, we are His children, he saved us, and has called us to be obedient to Him.

In a day of prosperity we are in great danger of forgetting God, our dependence upon him, our need of him, and our obligations to him. When the world smiles we are apt to make our court to it, and expect our happiness in it, and so we forget him that He his our only portion and rest.

It is probable that at that time there were few written copies of the whole law, only at the feasts of tabernacles the people had it read to them; and therefore God appointed them, at least for the present, to write some select sentences of the law, that were most weighty and comprehensive, upon their walls, or in scrolls of parchment to be worn about their wrists.  When Bibles were scarce, some select portions of scripture would be written on the walls and pillars of the churches, which the people might make familiar to them.

Teach them diligently - Heb. whet, or sharpen them, so as they may pierce deep into their hearts. This metaphor signifies the manner of instructing them, that it is to be done diligently, earnestly, frequently, discreetly.
