God Promises Contentment

I suppose volumes could be written about contentment. Surely contentment is desired by everyone, but we are so busy scrambling for education, jobs, marriage partners, homes, new cars, and vacations (to get away from it all and relax, right?  Sometimes vacations are more work than fun).  After all this, we need to update homes, cars, and perhaps, jobs.  It is never ending!  New technology is here today and out of date tomorrow.

Sometimes I like to compare us with the people in the Old Testament (found in Genesis 11) who wanted to build a city with a tower that would reach to heaven, so they could make a name for themselves.  Remind you of anyone you know?  I wonder what God thinks as He observes us hurrying around from place to place.

A widespread feeling of unrest exists in the world today.  The threat of terrorism certainly has everyone concerned, and rightly so.  Let us be in constant prayer for our nation and its leaders.  Of course, regardless of our situation, we have the assurance that God is always in control.

So how can we have contentment?  God's Word has the answer.  It's all about firmly fixing our hearts and minds on God and resting in His Word.

Make God your Number 1 Priority

Think about this:  A quote from Psalm 16:2 says, "I said to the LORD, 'You are my LORD; apart from you I have no good thing'."  God is the only thing that  really counts.  Nothing else is good.  You may be thinking, hey, wait a minute, I have some good things, my family, home, friends, church, to name a few.  Yes, certainly those things are good.  However, God is so superior to anything we have; there is simply no comparison.  Remember, Jesus said in Matthew 10:37, "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me."  This of course does not mean that we should not love our families.  This means that God is to have first priority in our lives.  And if indeed God is the first priority in our lives, we will have contentment.

We came into this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing.

Be Content With What You Have

God never promised that we would have everything we want.  God says, "If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that."  Unfortunately, we are sometimes greedy, and you cannot be content with greed in your heart.

In Hebrews 13:5 God's Word says, "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you'."

A final thought from God's Word is from 1 Timothy 6:6, which says, "Godliness with contentment is great gain."
