Battle Hymn of the Republic
Prior to the Civil War, Methodists in South Carolina were singing "Oh brother, shall we meet again on Canaan's happy shore?" A few years later soldiers in the north used the same catchy camp meeting tune to sing: "John Brown's Body." Julia Ward Howe heard this marching song and was inspired to pen "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord......As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free....." Nearly 150 years later we still take time to honor the memory of those who gave their lives in times of war. Copyright © 2000-2008 Patricia's Place. All rights reserved.
